2.4 Why can’t he write?

Although by no means universal, problems with handwriting are common in AS. This may be because of an immature pencil grip, poor spatial processing, under-developed fine motor skills, a problem with audio processing... any number of reasons. It may help to find out why your child is struggling – and if you do, then there may be much you can do to help – but at the end of the day this may be something you (and he) need to learn to live with. Tony Attwood claims that handwriting is an outdated obsession that is about as useful today as being able to saddle a horse! In the end it may be best just to accept this weakness and concentrate on helping him acquire good keyboard computer skills instead. There are computers on the market that are light, robust and easy to use. In ten years time, every child will probably have his own laptop in school. How many of us, as adults, use handwriting for anything other than notes to ourselves? It is the ability to communicate that is important (and which needs to be supported), not how that communication takes place.
